the black sea project
The Black Sea project – Vol 1. Turkey
One of my new projects is a documentarist photographic journey along the
coast of the Black Sea, travelling through all of the countries that are connected
with this sea: Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, focusing on
social – environmental – economic issues.
The first part of the travel that I have done is the coast of Turkey, and the first
trip is starting just northern-east of Istanbul, and arriving up to North of Ankara.
I am using 6×6 format colour slide film, giving a documentarist – objective visual
description of towns, commerce, past-time activities and general landscape. I
will be also using small format 35 mm film, with colour and black and white
for a quicker, closer and more personal look on things. Each picture will be
accompaigned by a description of the current place, with the region`s social -
economic – political characteristics.
The countries neighbouring the sea have different regimes, have different cultures
and religions, different socio-political situations, but they are all connected
by the same piece of water. This same connecting point creates a web of
customs, lifestyles and thinking, which, in these countries, however different
they are, but are likely to share some very similar patterns.
It`s a project that I will realize in the next few years, with enough funds to cover
the costs of voyage, films and equipment.
